- The call
- On cold mornings the door barely makes it up. The motor whines, the door crawls, and once or twice it has given up halfway. By afternoon, with the sun on the garage, it runs almost normally again.

Released from the opener, the door will not hold anywhere. Lift it to hip height, take your hands away, and it sinks back to the concrete, gathering speed on the way down.
Older detached garages often have extension springs stretched along each horizontal track rather than a shaft above the door. Balancing these works differently: the tension comes from how far each spring is stretched when the door is closed, and it is set by moving the cable attachment along the track hanger or changing the hook position. Both sides are adjusted equally so the door stays level, and the containment cable running through each spring is checked at the same time. The door is opened and clamped so the springs are relaxed during the work, then tested by hand across its travel until it rests where it is left.

Garage Door Balance Adjustment · Toronto

Scene 1
On a door with springs along the tracks, the check has a shape of its own. Both springs are compared for length and coil condition with the door closed, since a spring that has stretched further than its partner leaves one side of the door lighter. The pulleys are spun for wear, the cable clips on the track hangers are checked for equal position left and right, and the technician confirms a containment cable runs through the centre of each spring and is anchored at both ends. The bottom brackets and the S-hooks that set the spring tension are inspected for rust and deformation before any adjustment is planned.
Scene 2
Before any tension changes, the door is made immovable. The technician disconnects the opener, clamps a pair of locking pliers on the track just above a roller so the door cannot rise, and clears the area under the shaft. On a torsion system the springs remain wound while the winding bars are used to add or subtract turns, so nothing has to be fully unloaded for a simple adjustment. On an extension system the door is raised fully and clamped there, which relaxes the springs so the hooks and clips can be moved safely. This setup takes a few minutes and is what makes the adjustment itself calm and controlled.
Scene 3
Before leaving, the technician tells you how the door was set: the number of turns on each torsion spring or the hook position on each extension spring, the spring dimensions, the door's measured weight if it was weighed, and any parts that were replaced. Writing this on a card by the opener or inside the manual saves a future technician from starting from scratch, and it gives a reference point if the door ever starts to drift. Springs age gradually, so a note that says the door held at a certain number of turns tells a later visit how far things have moved.

The opener is built to move a balanced door, and its force limit is what makes it stop and reverse on contact. Raising that limit to lift a heavy door pushes the safety behaviour out of its intended range and works the motor and gears hard. The sound order is to balance the door first, then set the opener to suit it. Both are done in the same visit.
A straightforward tension adjustment on a sound door is generally about an hour, including the inspection, the hand tests and the opener checks at the end. Resetting cables to level the door, replacing rollers to remove friction, or moving to a spring replacement adds time. The technician will tell you what the inspection found and how the visit is shaping up before the work continues.
Whether the door drifts up, sinks, or hangs crooked when released; whether there is one spring on a shaft above the door or springs along the tracks; whether it is a single or double door and roughly how tall; when the springs were last changed if you know; what has been added to the door; and whether the opener strains, reverses or stalls. A photo of the spring area is useful.
